Action Plan

Recommendations for Improvement:

Basic/Practical (easily and quickly implemented)

  • Educate students to know that they do not have to create an ebscohost account to download a single chapter-add this information to ebook collections libguide: Update:Began to offer online ebook training workshops in summer/fall 2014-Ongoing-September 2014; A note has been added to the ebook collections guide informing the students that they do not need an account to download a chapter-In Progress-November, 2014;
  • Create a Guide on the Side with directions-place next to all items that can be downloaded-We have decided to pursue bullet no. 4. This may meet all of our needs. We will revisit -November 2014
  • Add chat box to ebook interface-We have decided to pursue bullet no. 4. This may meet all of our needs. We will revisit -November 2014
  • Provide access to the ebooks libguide next to all items that can be downloaded-Allan Duncan will explore the possiblity of adding a hotlink in every ebook record that directs them to the ebooks libguide-In Progress-November 2014-Allan reported that we think it is possible to add a hotlink in every ebook record that directs the user to the ebooks libguide and he will initiate the process and report back-Jan. 2015. CJM group met with Andie Leonard and Beth Cramer on April 16, 2015. We decided to table this recommendation and explore other options, which are listed below:
    • Andie will contact Ebsco (which has the least user-friendly ebook interface) with our specific concerns and see if changes can be made to the Ebsco ebook interface (more like proquest)-See below:
    • Question no. 1-Is it possible to download just a chapter? If not, can you make this possible? If so, can you simplify the process?
Response-Yes, please see our FAQ http://support.ebsco.com/knowledge_base/detail.php?id=5811
Question no. 1 continued-People expect to see more information about how to download a chapter, section, or pages before they open the e-book. As it is now, it is not clear until you actually open it and only if you see the “E-mail Pages” link and that you can email it to yourself.
Response-Last summer we released an improvement to our eBook viewer to clarify how users can save pages or chapters from an EBSCO eBook. This enhancement is the addition of a "Save" icon in the eBook viewer and improved hover text which now reads "Select and save pages from this eBook". We appreciate your feedback on our products and will continue to develop features to best meet your needs.
Question no. 2-In general, users find it difficult to install AdobeDE – can this be simplified?
Response-Please see our FAQ at: http://support.ebsco.com/knowledge_base/detail.php?id=5882.  There is also a link to Adobe Digital Editions website for troubleshooting installation problems with their product.Completed-April 2015
    • PR Week for ebooks-Possible event names: Ebook Torture Week or Living with Ebooks (collaborate with the SGA,)
    • Add library guide widget to EDS- Can the library guide widget default to the ebook guide in the ebook records,
    • Ask John Boyd about revising ebook guide to reflect the need of the user as they are directed to the guide,e.g. What would you like to do?  Download a chapter, download a few pages, email a few pages, etc.  Information about how to download chapters for ebooks from ebrary and EBSCOhost has been added to the guide-Completed-July 2015
    • Investigate repeating ebook survey to get another benchmark

Higher Level (enhancements implemented over a longer period)

  • Ask our ebook vendors to change interface so that it is more obvious how to download a chapter-ebrary has improved their user interface.  It is more user friendly. In Progress-November 2014-See above notes from April 16 meeting.  October 2015--EBSCO has also improved their user interface, especially for online scrolling reading.
  • Drop-in workshops for students (both Staff and Librarians can lead these workshops): Update: Began to offer online ebook training workshops in summer/fall 2014-Ongoing-September 2014
  • Buy only books that are easy to download  October 2015--We continue to lease large numbers of imperfect ebooks, but the vendors are improving them.  We have added JSTOR ebooks, which are easy to download by the chapter.  We are participating in UNC Charlotte's initiative to demand less restrictive, more user-friendly ebooks.
