Scenario No. 1:

You are majoring in history and you are enrolled in HIS 2800 this semester.  This course has an emphasis on early African American history.  You are required to read the following book:

Many thousands gone: the first two centuries of slavery in North America by Ira Berlin.

Cabin, quarter, plantation: architecture and landscapes of North American Slavery edited by Clifton Ellis and Rebecca Ginsburg

Slavery in colonial America, 1619-1776 / by Betty Wood

Enjoy the same liberty : Black Americans and the revolutionary era  by Edward Countryman

Action Plan

Recommendations for Improvement:

Basic/Practical (easily and quickly implemented)

  • Need an explanation of LC classification system for Freshmen (would benefit all students).  Freshmen are coming from Dewey and are not familiar with LC-How to read an LC call no.video/tutorial/module:  Update: Libguide entitled How to Read Library Call Numbers has been created; handout focusing on how to find your book on the shelf and read an LC call number has been created and placed at the LSD desk for distribution to patrons; poster describing how to read an LC call number for main stacks is In progress: 9/10/2014
  • Service desk personnel should be trained to explain the location, and call no. Update: a handout focusing on how to find your book on the shelf and read an LC call number has been created and placed at the LSD desk for distribution to patrons; LSD personnel will make a determination on a case by case basis about whether to accompany the patron to the stacks (if patron seems to need a little tlc) and explain the LC classification system on the way to main stack-Completed October/2014
  • Keep AppSearch default display to books-Students expect to see books first: Update: Completed-August 2014
  • Change terminology on Library home page: Classic Catalog to Library Catalog  and Articles Only to Article Search: Update-New tabbed search box resolves this issue-Completed August 2014
  • Make Articles Only (or Article Search, as suggested above) link on Library home page go to article database page, not current page which begins with: Quick Search for Article: Update-Completed August 2014-Additional Comments:  on the tabbed search box, add this link to the APPSearch display: List of all article databases-In Progress-9/10/2014

Higher Level (enhancements implemented over a longer period)

  • Re-design search box options on Library home page:  all search boxes should be the same size-APPsearch, Classic Catalog & Article Search: Update: New tabbed search box resolves this issue-Completed August 2014

  • AppSearch: Add map it button to short entry display next to request it button or remove request button from short entry list and put map it button in its place. Completed-July 2015
  • appsearch book record

Appsearch

On the homepage there is just a single search bar-maybe a few more options? Such as choice of book/article or author/title/keyword

Student thought he had found the book, but no-it was not the book. –Student found book review article!

Confused

Appsearch  default had been changed to articles. Student did not realize he was looking at a list of articles at first.  When he figured that out-clicked on Books and More and found the book.

Student did not see Map it button .We think student did not look at the complete-record.

Xiaorong and I checked record and map it button was there) and instead clicked on ASU  Main Stacks which showed him the digital map of the second floor.

Even though student was unsure about call no. arrangement, he found the book?

I don’t like AppSearch

As a primary search function.  One assumes that that is THE SEARCH box.

Because it is there in center page-Big

Has the word SEARCH

But it takes me first to articles, when I was

Searching for a book.

Book should be default choice.

Could the classic catalog be on this home page too?  Or a search box for articles, then one for books .

One tour and a class

session or two do not adequately train students in using our sophisticated library.

Chose first link, which had same title, but it is not the book.  Xiaorong and I checked-True statement –book reviews.

Clicks on back button- Sees-Books and More

Why doesn’t this come up first? (Appsearch default had been changed to articles. )

Books & More from AppSearch

Now what?

2 options

First has title, I click on it.

Book Link

Now what? Numbers and

letters don’t make

sense.  Why didn’t

I learn this is high school

Does not understand call # arrangement-It is hard to distinguish the call # from the location on APPsearch short entry display-It all runs together

Physical maps in stairwells

Sometimes people are not aware that stand-up computers do not require  log in.

Maybe make a banner announcement on web site that appsearch default was changed to articles.

Check catalog on stand-up

computer on at entrance on main floor.  Used Appsearch

Didn’t see book right away because it was searching under articles and it took a long time to display results.  Then I examined the page and discovered there was a book. (Book was display in frame on the left-student clicked on it and it took him to the book record)

Waiting

Confused

Appsearch results take a long time to display

Student expected to see a list of books not articles/default display had been changed to articles/w/o any notification.
