Summer Science Program, circa 1980

This image shows a student typing on a typewriter during a computer workshop held as part of the Summer Science Program at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the 1980s. Two other students can be seen in the background. Appalachian State offered many summer programs, including camp activities at Camp Broadstone, math and science programs, music camps, and nature studies for children and adults. Summer camp programs are arranged through the Office of Conferences and Institutes.

This image shows a student writing on a sheet of paper in a classroom in the Department of Chemistry at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in the early 1980s. The Department of Chemistry exists within the College of Arts and Sciences, and aims to provide training for future chemists, basic understanding of the principles of chemistry, and chemistry teachers. The Department has been accredited by the American Chemical Society.

This image shows Douglas H. Covington, the prinicple speaker at Appalachian State speaking at commencement ceremonies at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in August 1981. Douglas Covington was chancellor of Winston-Salem University. Commencement was held at the Varsity Gymnasium, built 1968. This image appears in the August 10, 1981 edition of the Watauga Democrat (p. 3A).

Black Student Association, 1985

This image shows the members of the Black Student Association at Appalachian State University (1967-current) for 1985-86 sitting in a room in front of a mural of African-American leaders. The Black Student Association was formed in 1974 and sponsors various annual cultural events for the African-American community, including Black Heritage Week, Black History Month, and serves as a support system for African-American students. This image appears in the 1986 Rhododendron (p. 75).

This image shows the Black Student Association's Gospel Choir at Appalachian State University (1967-current) performing during Black Awareness Week in 1985-86. The Black Student Association was formed in 1974 and sponsors various annual cultural events for the African-American community, including Black Heritage Week, Black History Month, and serves as a support system for African-American students. The Gospel Choir performs several concerts a year. This image appears in the 1986 Rhododendron (p. 75) and the 1987 Rhododendron (p. 51).

International Students, 1985

This image shows international student Kiyoshi Adachi from Bolivia sitting in his dorm room in the International Hall at East Residence Hall, built 1952, at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in 1985-86. In 1985, Appalachian State had approximately 110 international students from at least 25 different countries. International programs, international student services, and the Study Abroad program are provided by the Office of International Education and Development. This image appears in the 1986 Rhododendron (p. 27).

The Appalachian, 1985-86, entertainment editor

This image shows Robert Hawkins, the 1985-86 entertainment editor for "The Appalachian" at Appalachian State University (1967-current), sitting at a desk writing a column for the paper. "The Appalachian" has been the student-run newspaper for Appalachian State since 1934. It was published twice weekly, and covered campus and community events. This image appears in the 1986 Rhododendron (p. 73).

This image shows Debi Phifer about to be crowned Homecoming queen during halftime at Conrad Stadium, rebuilt 1979, at Appalachian State University (1967-current) on October 4, 1986. Conrad Stadium was renamed Kidd-Brewer in 1988. Homecoming was an annual event that included dramatic performances, a parade, a dance, a football game, reunion activities, and the crowning of the Homecoming queen. This image appears in the 1987 Rhododendron (p. 345).

This image shows the Chuck Davis Dance Ensemble performing an African dance in I. G. Greer Hall, built 1950, during Black Heritage Week at Appalachian State University (1967-current) in October 1986. Black Heritage Week lasted from October 6-12, 1986, and emphasized the culture and heritage of African-American society. The event was sponsored by the Office of Minority Affairs and the Black Student Association. This image appears in the 1987 Rhododendron (p. 64).

Apartheid Protest, 1986

This image shows some students and faculty at Appalachian State University (1967-current) marching to the B. B. Dougherty Administration Building to protest the Apartheid and Appalachian State's investments in South Africa in September 1986. Participants can be seen carrying crosses and signs. The event followed an NAACP Apartheid protest in Washington, D.C., on September 14, 1986.
