This image shows one of the speakers of a conference titled "Institute on the Negro in American History," held at Appalachian State University (1967-current) during the summer of 1969. The federally-sponsored institute focused on the presence of the African-American in American history and included speakers such as scholars Claude Brown, Bell Irvin Wiley, George B. Thomas, Henry Lee Swint, Daniel Woodard, and Darwin T. Turner. It was directed by Appalachian State History Professor George Antone and followed with another conference titled, "Teaching Black History," which focused on integrating African-American history into history curriculums.

This image shows professional boxer Muhammad Ali speaking at Appalachian State University as part of the Artist and Lecture Series in 1969. Established in the mid-1950s, Artist and Lecture Series was a program to bring a variety of music, dance, and theater performances to Appalachian State Teachers College (1929-1967) and Appalachian State University (1967-current). Performances and lectures were scheduled throughout the University's academic year, and were attended by students, faculty and staff, as well as members of the surrounding community. Nationally or regionally known artists, musicians, and scholars were invited to the university based on relevance to students and campus events.
