LibGuides Best Practices: Create/Add Content

Assets

Assets are the actual content of your guides. You can create new assets or reuse already created assets by mapping or copying the assets.

Adding Assets

  1. Click the  Add / Reorder button within the box.
  2. Choose the asset type you want to add.
  3. Enter the necessary information for that asset (or reuse an existing asset).
  4. Click Save.

Note: Items added at the guide level will automatically appear in your Assets library. This does not apply to: rich text, polls, guide lists, or Google searches. Those items can be added to guides, but won't be listed in your Assets library

Reusing Assets

Similar to Page and Box, you can reuse content items in LibGuides by "Map" or "Copy." To reuse an asset, you will:

  1. Click the  Add / Reorder button and then choose your asset type.
  2. Choose the Reuse Existing ... tab. (Note: It's not possible to reuse the rich text, polls, guide lists, or Google searches).
  3. Search the asset by typing in its title in the search box. For example, type "Ask a Librarian" if you wish to reuse the chat widget.
  4. Copy: please leave the box unchecked to create a mapped item. Check the box will copy the asset rather than mapped to the original. The copied item will appear as a separate asset in the Assets library. Your copied asset won't be updated if any changes were made to the original.
  5. Click Save.

Rich Text/HTML

Text boxes -- or, more accurately -- Rich Text/Dynamic Content/Scripts boxes -- are the most basic and

most flexible type of content box in LibGuides.

Using the Rich Text Editor -- text can be highlighted and formatted in many ways.

The HTMLSource icon in the editor makes it possible to edit the HTML code, as well.

Database

Use this Box type to add a database from the A-Z database list. Do use a link for a database. databases must be added from the add/reorder menu.

Link

A Simple Web Links box lets you present online resources with brief descriptions. It is recommended that, if possible, you add links as link assets rather than as a hyperlink. Hyperlinks cannot be checked by Springshare's link checker tool.

Media/Widget

Media or Widget content blocks can contain an embed code for a video or other media, as well as scripts.  In most cases, the code will contain an OBJECT, EMBED or SCRIPT tag.

Book From the Catalog

Add a book from the library's catalog. Paste the book's ISBN into the first box and you should be able to locate the book's information. You can add print or eBooks.

Document/File

This box type allows you to add files to the LibGuide. Remember that any files you add should also be accessible.

Guide List

You can select and link to single or groups of guides.

Poll

You can create polls within LibGuides to gather feedback.

About Gallery Boxes

  • Gallery boxes are galleries of images or other assets.
  • You can display all of your slides at one time (as a grid of images) or allow users to scroll through the slides using < > controls.
  • Gallery boxes are one of the most accessible and mobile-friendly ways to display multiple images with accompanying text.
  • Add a gallery box by choosing "Gallery" from the Type drop-down when you are creating a box.

Linked images

It's okay to link images in a gallery box. Put your link in the Link URL field and describe the link's destination in the Image Alt Text field. For example, the image above is linked to the library homepage and the image alt text is "Belk Library homepage."

Best Practices

Follow these accessibility best practices:

  • All images should have alt text.
  • "Automatically play" should be set to "Off."
  • "Show Dots" should be set to "On."
  • Choose colors for the caption and background with plenty of contrast. Black text on a transparent background looks best in this template.

The Oxford Companion to American Theatre

You can also add other asset types, such as this Book asset, to a slide.
