Department of Geography and Planning

Appalachian’s GIS Labs are located in the Geography and Planning Department on the third floor of Rankin Science West. Lab computers run
ArcGIS 9.x, Erdas Imagine, and CorelDraw, along with other packages that are part of the University’s build.

In addition, two research labs are located in the Department and provide undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to work with faculty on various projects. These labs contain several high end workstations for data processing and a large format plotter is available for map production.

The Department conducts several workshops each year on GIS related topics such as Introduction to ArcGIS 9.x and Spatial and 3D Analyst in ArcGIS 9.x.

Undergraduate students can earn a degree in Geography with a concentration in GIS or decide to major in another field and acquire a GIS Certificate. Graduate students often customize their program of study to reflect a GI Science specialization.

For more information on all these topics go to Department's home page.
