Getting Started

  • Learning about GIS
    • Online Training:
      • Via the ESRI site-license you have access to numerous online courses (free of charge). See the ESRI training page for a listing of the available online courses.
    • On the ASU Campus:
      • The Department of Geography and Planning conducts several workshops each year on GIS related topics such as Introduction to ArcGIS 9.x and Spatial and 3D Analyst in ArcGIS 9.x.
      • Undergraduate students can earn a degree in Geography with a concentration in GIS or decide to major in another field and acquire a GIS Certificate. Graduate students often customize their program of study to reflect a GI Science specialization.

  • Software
    The ASU campus has a site-license for Environmental Systems Research Institute's ArcGIS software suite. This software is for ASU affiliates (faculty, staff and students) .
     
  • GIS Labs - Department of Geography and Planning
    Appalachian’s GIS Labs are located on the third floor of Rankin Science West. Lab computers run ArcGIS 9.x, Erdas Imagine, and CorelDraw, along with other packages that are part of the University’s build.

    In addition, two research labs are located in the Department and provide undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to work with faculty on various projects. These labs contain several high end workstations for data processing and a large format plotter is available for map production.

    BE AWARE THAT THERE ARE ISSUES WITH STORAGE OF DATA ON PUBLIC MACHINES. IF YOU NEED CLARIFICATION, PLEASE CONTACT THE Department of Geography and Planning.
