Dissertations and Theses: Borrowing or Purchasing

A library guide to locate dissertations and theses at ASU and around the world.

Interlibrary Loan

Many dissertations and theses are available online for free, but many are not.  Request these through InterLibrary Loan Services (ILLiad).  Another library, usually where the dissertation or thesis originated, may have a physical copy they will lend.  If not, our Library can often buy them.  To submit an InterLibrary Loan request, use ILLiad, our automated system.

  • Submitting an ILLiad request does not guarantee that we will be able to borrow it or buy it.
  • It typically takes at least one week to receive the item.
  • For additional questions regarding ILLiad requests, contact the InterLibrary Loan staff at (828) 262-2826 or e-mail moodydm@appstate.edu.

Purchasing Dissertations

In case the Library has been unable to acquire a dissertation for you and it's not on the Web, you may purchase a paper or electronic copy from ProQuest Dissertation Express on a fee-per-item basis.

Using ILLiad

To submit an ILLiad request:

1. Logon to ILLiad

(If you don't already have an ILLiad account, you will need to create an account by clicking on the "First Time Users!" link).

From ILLiad's Main Menu:

2. Click on the third button, "Request a Thesis" (to request a thesis or a dissertation)

3. Complete the form and click the "Submit Request" button.

  • You will receive an e-mail message indicating when the item is ready to be picked-up at the library.
  • If we are unable to fill your request, you will also receive an email.
