A call number is a unique identifier used to organize and locate materials in a library.
The slide deck below provides some examples of the different call numbers you will encounter in the Music Library.
Type of Call Numbers
Reference books cannot be checked out. Most but not all reference books include REF on the call number.

Reference Scores cannot be checked out. Most (but not all) call numbers for reference scores begin with 03. There are also a few scores in the general collection that begin with 03 so be sure to check the location in the catalog.

Books about music are organized by Subject and have call numbers that begin with letters.

ML 82 .O27 2002
Scores are organized by instrument/ensemble type and their call numbers begin with numbers.

52.05 .B813 Q816
Miniature scores have call numbers beginning with m.s., but otherwise follow the same format as regular scores. Unlike reference scores, mini scores can be checked out.

Three different physical recording formats are available for checkout through the music library. These are: Vinyl Records, CDs, & DVDs. If you need to check out one of these items, please ask a staff member for help.
