LIB5070: Interactive Booktalk Assignment

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will identify and become familiar with the key elements of a booktalk
  • Students will explore augmented reality as a teaching tool
  • Students will demonstrate ability to use aurasma app

General Assignment Description

  • Using the book you chose from the IMC Literature Featuring Characters with Disabilities list (formerly the Differently-abled list), create 2 video booktalks.
    • The first booktalk will be a commercial teaser. The purpose of the teaser is to grab the attention and peak the interest of the patron(maximum 30 seconds in length)
    • The second booktalk will be an extended version of your teaser incorporating the elements of a good booktalk (maximum  2 minutes in length)
    • Submit your booktalk scripts to your instructor

Assignment Steps

Creating Your Videos

  • Create your videos using your mobile device (iphone or ipad)
  • Save your videos to the photo/video library on your device

Creating your Aurasma Account and subscribing to LIB5070-2016 Channel

  • Download the free aurasma mobile app to your mobile device (search for aurasma in your app store)
  • When you open the app for the first time, a brief tutorial will appear. On the last page of the tutorial you will be asked to login or create a new account.
  •  In order for the class to use the same aurasma channel, you will need to login using the shared LIB5070-2016 account (username: LIB5070-2016 password: asubelk--username and password are case-sensitive).

Creating your Aura

  • Follow the written tutorial on how to create an aura.  (also available in the AETZone library)
  • After adding your overlay (video) and your trigger image, you will be asked to give your new aura a name. While you are on this page make sure to set your aura as a public aura and add it to the LIB5070-2016 channel.
    • Trigger images
      • 30 second teaser-use a picture of you with book
      • Extended version-use typed or written index card with  book title, author and IMC call number
      • Naming Conventions-for your teaser use:  lastnamefirstinitial_t  and for your extended version use: lastnamefirstinitial_e

Preparing the Interactive Bulletins in the Belk Library AETZone and IMC

  • Upload your trigger images and videos to the google drive folder for the assignment.
  • Geri and Jewel will create the bulletin boards
  • Naming Conventions-for your teaser use:  lastnamefirstinitial_t  and for your extended version use: lastnamefirstinitial_e

TIPS: 

  • To take a clear picture of your trigger-don’t press the button until the bar goes green 
  • There are 3 good introductory videos on the wall in the AETZone Belk Library for you to watch
  • Check out the sample aura’s on the wall in the AETZone Belk Library
