The Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) was the largest study of women’s health at the time
(starting in 1993) and specifically targeted a postmenopausal population. In 2002, the WHI
prematurely stopped an arm of the study examining hormone replacement therapy (HRT). The
dissemination of their findings led to rapid decrease in the use of HRT (26.9% to 4.7% from
1999 to 2020). Considering the population of postmenopausal women is growing due to greater
longevity, the need for therapies and treatments will only increase. In addition, criticisms of the
WHI study have emerged over time.
