Instructions for Graduate Student Clinicians:
Speech-language pathologists are responsible for making informed clinical decisions to best
support their clients. An essential component of this informed clinical decision making is
understanding and using evidence-based practice (EBP). The American Speech-Language
Hearing Association (ASHA) describes EBP as “an approach in which current, high-quality
research evidence is integrated with practitioner expertise and client preferences and values in
the process of making clinical decisions” (https://www.asha.org/policy/ps2005-00221/).
As part of your clinical practicum experience this semester, you will use the EBP process to
make decisions regarding your clients’ treatment. Please follow these steps*:
1. Identify your clinical question
a. Your question should specifically relate to treatment with a client you are working
with this semester
2. Gather evidence
a. Include both internal and external evidence. Identify at least 6 sources of external
evidence.
3. Assess evidence
4. Make your clinical decision
* See ASHA’s guidance documents relating to using the EBP process here.
Once you have completed these steps, you will share your findings in an interprofessional
seminar meeting with the other graduate student clinicians, our classroom teacher, and
occupational therapist. You are encouraged to share visuals, demonstrations, etc. in your brief
(15-20 min) presentation.
