Writing Center & Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) Resources: Associations and Conferences

International Writing Centers Association: The International Writing Centers Association (IWCA), a National Council of Teachers of English affiliate founded in 1983, fosters the development of writing center directors,tutors, and staff by sponsoring meetings, publications, and other professional activities; by encouraging scholarship connected to writing center-related fields; and by providing an international forum for writing center concerns. 

The National Conference on Peer Tutoring in Writing (NCPTW) promotes the teaching of writing through collaborative learning. Peer tutors and NCPTW professionals help students become self-sufficient writers. NCPTW professionals are leaders in collaborative approaches, responding to the challenges of creating and operating writing centers, developing innovative peer tutoring programs, and promoting the work of their peer tutors. The NCPTW offers peer tutors the opportunity to contribute in professional and scholarly ways to the larger writing center community, and we’re dedicated to providing forums for tutors to share and present research at national and international conferences.

The Southeastern Writing Center Association (SWCA) was founded in 1981 to advance literacy; to further the theoretical, practical, and political concerns of writing center professionals; and to serve as a forum for the writing concerns of students, faculty, staff, and writing professionals from both academic and nonacademic communities in the southeastern region of the United States. The SWCA includes in its designated region North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, Puerto Rico, and the American Virgin Islands.

The Association for Writing Across the Curriculum (AWAC) brings together the intellectual, human, political, and economic capital of the Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) community to better support and grow WAC as a global intellectual and pedagogical movement.

AWAC promotes initiatives that support students’ writing across their academic careers, faculty development related to student writing and writing pedagogy, and research into writing across domains (e.g. disciplines, professions, communities, and academic levels) and transnationally.

IWAC is presented by the Association for Writing Across the Curriculum (AWAC). Prior to the formation of AWAC, the conference was managed by an independent group of conference directors.
