Reference List

The reference list should include all sources cited in the text of your paper. The reference page should be double spaced and alphabetized by the first author's last name. The second line of each reference should be indented, called a hanging indent. To create a hanging indent in Word, highlight the references and then go to Format:Paragraph:Indentation:Special: Choose Hanging.

The following examples are provided of the most commonly cited sources. More detail can be found in the Appendix of the ASA Manual (page 105).

ASA Style - Reference Examples

Book

LastName, FirstName and FirstName LastName. Year of publication. Book Title Italicized. Publisher's City, State: Publisher's Name.

Examples:

Ronson, Jon. 2015. So You've Been Publicly Shamed. New York, NY: Riverhead Books.

Brym, Robert J. and John Lie. 2013. Sociology: Pop Culture to Social Structure. Belmont, CA: Wadsworth Cengage Learning.

Book Chapter

LastName, FirstName and FirstName LastName. Year of publication. "Chapter Title." Pp. x-x in Book Title Italicized, edited by I. I. LastName and I. I. LastName. Publisher's City, State: Publisher's Name.

Evans, Karen. 2013. "Re-Thinking Community in the Digital Age?" Pp. 50-65 in Digital Sociology: Critical Perspectives, edited by K. Orton-Johnson and N. Prior. New York, NY: Palgrave Macmillan.

Journal Article

LastName, FirstName and FirstName LastName. Year of publication. "Chapter Title." Name of Publication Volume Number(Issue Number):Page numbers of article.

McKenzie, Jordan. 2016. "Happiness Vs Contentment? A Case for a Sociology of the Good Life." Journal for the Theory of Social Behaviour 46(3):252-267.

Journal Article from Online
