Biographical Information About Bob Myers

Bob Myers had a long career as a distinguished motorsports journalist.He is especially notable for championing women drivers in an era when many in the sport believed women 's only role in auto racing should be trophy queens.

Myers was born July 7, 1933. A native of Thomasville, NC, he he earned a degree in journalism from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 1958. Following a short stint as sports editor of the Thomasville Times, he joined the Charlotte News as a sports writer, covering all sports. Myers began specializing in motorsports in 1965. In 1986 he began covering stock car races for the Charlotte Observer. At the same time Myers wrote articles for Stock Car Racing Magazine (1966-1982). He joined Circle Track as a feature and column writer in 1983. He also ghosted racing columns for Neil Bonnett, Davey Allison, and Kyle Petty in AutoWeek..

Myers has been the recipient of many motorsports writing awards from the National Motorsports Association Press. In 1970 he won the Henry McLemore Award, the highest honor in motorsports journalism. It is not given every year, only when previous recipients select an individual as worthy of the honor. In 1991 he was honored as the National Motorsports Press Association's Writer of the Year, winning the George Cunningham Award for excellence in writing. He was a member of the selection committee for inductees into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame for many years.

Myers married Mildred Juanita Chapman December 15, 1963; they had two sons, Robert and Richard. Following Mildred's death in 1991 he married Cladis Bradshaw.

Myers died January 13, 2018 of cancer.
