Using the Catalog

LOOKING FOR PRINTED MUSIC OR RECORDINGS AND INFORMATION ABOUT BAND MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE
   1. Use AUTHOR search in ASU's Library Catalog, using composer's last name and first name.

  • AUTHOR: Sousa, John Philip
  • AUTHOR: Holst, Gustav

In the author search, arrangement of a composer's works is by UNIFORM TITLE. Uniform titles are either DISTINCTIVE titles in the original language, or GENERIC titles, which begin with form or genre, and are followed by performance medium, serial or opus or thematic catalogue number, and key. Examples:

  • Band music, selections [some of a composer's band music, but not all of it]
  • Works [the complete works of a composer in either scores or recordings]
  • Tombeau de Couperin (Ravel)
  • Sonatas, piano, no. 14, op. 27, no. 2, C# minor (Beethoven)

        2. For for specific, known pieces with distinctive titles, do a TITLE search in  ASU 's Library Catalog.   Examples:

    • TITLE: Stars and Stripes Forever
    • TITLE: Suites, Band, Op. 28, no. 1

         3. To find information about band music as well as printed music and recordings, do a SUBJECT search in  ASU 's Library Catalog, using terms found in Library of Congress Subject Headings, such as:

    • Bands (Music)
    • Band music
    • Brass band music
    • Instrumentation and orchestration (Band)
    • Marching band
    • Marching drills
    • Military music
    • Wind ensembles

    Browsing the Shelves

Because printed music and books are classified--i.e., grouped with similar items on the shelves--browsing can be an effective method for finding material. Look on the shelves under the following numbers.

    • 63 = Music for band or wind ensemble
    • ML 1300 = History of band music
    • MT 73 = Band arranging
    • MT 733 = Band instruction and study
