Library Main Stacks Review Project: Overview

To inform the Applachian State University campus about the University Libraries Main Stacks Review Project.

Library Main Stacks?

Belk Library and Information Commons main stacks consist of the books shelved on the second and third floors which are arranged in the Library of Congress classification system.  These floors house the main circulating collection of Belk Library.  The second floor contains books with the call letters A through J and third floor contains those in K through Z.    The Belk main stacks do not include Special Collections or the Instructional Media Center (IMC).

The Project

To expand student and faculty services and to open space to allow new books to be added, the University Libraries plan a comprehensive review of books that have no recorded re-shelvings or check-outs in the last 20 years and which were added to the collection prior to 1995.

Although Librarians conduct ongoing review of collections, a comprehensive review has not been conducted since the library opened. With more than 16,000 paper books added to the ASU Libraries each year,  the number of items withdrawn will be replenished by new acquisitions in 5 years’ time.  Without freed space, additional review projects will be needed within a few years’ time, existing services will be compromised, new services will be reduced, and student study seats could not be added.

University Libraries welcome input from faculty on individual titles faculty members would like to see retained in paper.  To find out more about the project, click on the Quick Facts, FAQ, and Timeline tabs above. The Review Lists tab above will provide lists by call number of the book titles in the main stacks that have no recorded use in the last 20 years when the review period begins.
